How fit are you, really?

VO₂ max — the maximum volume of oxygen your body can use, per kilogram, per minute — is the single best sea-level predictor of how comfortably you'll handle the daily ascent profile on Kilimanjaro. Put in a recent honest number below; we'll estimate yours, show you where you stand against population averages, and tell you plainly what it means for the route you're considering.

Three ways to estimate it. Pick whichever you have a real number for. A recent 5km race time is the easiest — most fitness-aware adults can give one without going for a test run. Cooper test and beep test are equally valid if you've done either recently.

One important honesty check. These formulas assume a hard, recent effort — a race or time-trial pace, not a casual jog. If you put in a casual number, the estimate will under-read your real VO₂ max. Be honest with yourself.

Important honest caveats

  • VO₂ max predicts performance above 5,000 m poorly. Up high, what matters more is acclimatisation, hydration, and the absence of HAPE/HACE — not your sea-level fitness. Don't assume "I'm fit, I'll be fine."
  • These estimates carry a ±4 ml/kg/min uncertainty band. The range shown above is honest; the three input methods can produce moderately different numbers for the same person. A single decimal-precise figure would be false confidence.
  • Power-to-weight matters as much as VO₂ max. A heavier climber with the same VO₂ max moves a larger absolute load uphill. If you're carrying extra weight, losing it helps as much as training does.
  • The TK thresholds above are rules of thumb from our experience, not laboratory cut-offs. Plenty of people with "amber" numbers summit; some with "green" numbers don't. Acclimatisation and willingness to turn back matter more than any single number.
