New COVID-19 Related Discount for Solo Climbers

COVID-19 has created some uncertainties with travel. We're finding that many solo trekkers are reluctant to book and pay in full far in advance of their climbs because of the possibility of their or a fellow climber's airline changing their flights with little notice. To address this issue, we are now able to offer the following new conditions, valid until such time as COVID-related conditions no longer apply (likely no sooner than summer 2021):

All Solo Climbers Now Pay the 2-Person Rate on Advantage & Excel Climbs in 2021

This rate will apply whether or not any other climbers end up climbing with you. This addresses the risk of joining a climb and having other trekkers pull out at the last minute because of COVID-related changes to travelling conditions in their respective country. We hope this makes climbing solo affordable to many more trekkers.

Our Best Selling Routes

With so many routes to choose from, you may feel a little lost before you even get started! To help you navigate this long list of options it may be useful to know that in 2021 the routes that look like being the most popular with our own clients, appear to be the following, in order of popularity:

  • 7 or 8 day TK Lemosho Advantage - all climbers use our unique northern route for great acclimatisation and freedom from crowds. 7 days is fine for those with a good pace or with some high altitude trekking experience. Otherwise, 8 days is recommended.
  •  6 or 7 day TK Rongai Advantage - particularly recommended for those carrying old knee or ankle injuries, as the descent is gentler than on Lemosho. All climbers use our unique variant on Rongai. Far superior acclimatisation to standard Rongai. 7 days is recommended for all but the very youthful and strong, and those with experience at altitude.
  • 7 day Machame Advantage - a good route in the wet / low season. Crowded at other times of year. Acclimatisation is inferior to the TK Lemosho and TK Rongai routes, and incidence of AMS is relatively high.
  • 6 day Machame Advantage - only for the young and fit happy to endure the crowds, and those known to adapt well to altitude, or who have visited high altitudes regularly. Otherwise, there is high incidence of severe AMS, and relatively low chances of summit success.

While these routes are very popular with Team Kilimanjaro trekkers, with the exception of Machame - which is always crowded except in the rainy season - they remain very quiet and free of crowds, with the lack of crowding being one of the most significant criteria that draw so many of our clients to these routes.

The following prices are applicable both to private groups and to pre-scheduled / open climbs. The price per person is determined by the size of the booking group, and not necessarily the number of climbers that ultimately climb together.

Currencies and Payment Methods

We accept SWIFT / SEPA / BACS and wire transfers in the following currencies:

πŸ’΅ US Dollars
πŸ’Ά Euros
πŸ’· Pounds Sterling

We accept Visa, MasterCard and AMEX payments in πŸ’· Pounds Sterling only.

Price List for Advantage and Excel Series Climbs

With six routes (excluding the many unique variants we run), five different support series, and around five different durations for each option, there are some 138 prices to choose from! If you don't want to opt for one of our popular choices above you'll definitely find what you want in the following table. Use the filter to make it easier to find what you need.

Excel Series is certainly more challenging than the Advantage Series, requiring a good level of fitness and thorough acclimatisation to be obtained in order to sleep comfortably at 5,729m - but in my opinion the enhanced experience of being able to tour the crater, look into the heart of the volcano, get close to the ice-fields, and watch the sun set over Africa from the incredible vantage point of the Western Breach, all makes Excel well worth the extra challenge.

Price List for Lite and Superlite Series Climbs

For those wanting minimal support, or to be almost totally self-sufficient with no support at all - except for the mandatory guides - the following are our Lite and Superlite options.

Non-Summit Short Kilimanjaro Climbs and Day Treks

Some trekkers would love to see Kilimanjaro but simply don't have the time for a full length climb that will take them to the summit. With these climbers in mind we are able to offer short treks lasting 1 or 2 days on two routes: Marangu and Shira.

Our non-summit climbs assume you have made your own way to Arusha and that you require us to collect you from your hotel and return you there after the trek. These prices do not include hotel accommodation or airport transfers, therefore - only the transfers to the mountain and back, guide and porter wages, park fees, and food on the trek.

The above prices determined by the size of the booking group, and not necessarily the number of climbers that ultimately climb together.

Explanation of Support Levels

With our founder first climbing the mountain as a pauper on a shoestring in 1 day, for less than fifty dollars, in March 2000, we have long aspired to cater to a wide range of budgets, fitness levels, and adventurer "ideologies"!

With this in mind we have created 5 different series, ranging from Superlite for the absolute minimalist who wants zero support at low cost, to the opposite extreme: Hemingway - first pioneered by our founders when they took their entire family (including their 5, 7 and 9 year olds, with special permission) to Kilimanjaro's summit in 2012 - with comfortable beds; ensuite toilets and bathroom area with warm water for bathing; exquisite cuisine prepared by our top chefs; and all in very spacious 2-metre high tents.

Advantage Series - Our Most Popular Choice

This is our usual option. High level of support with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and meat. Mess tents will be used and three course hot lunches will be served most days. This strategy is designed to maximise nutrition by encouraging rest and appetite in an environment where this usually suffers. Tried and tested this method has proved extremely successful.

  • At least 4 out of 5 of our clients will elect to choose this series
  • High level of support with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and meat
  • Mess tents will be used and three course hot lunches will be served most days
  • Series designed to maximise nutrition by encouraging rest and appetite in an environment where this usually suffers
  • Tried and tested, this method has proven extremely successful
  • All mandatory park fees included
  • 2 nights’ standard accommodation in Arusha is included
  • Airport transfers both ways included
  • Typical climber to staff ratios are: 1:9, 2:13, 3:16, 4:18, 5:21, 6:24, 7:27, 8:30

Excel Series - Includes a Night in the Crater

This is a very exciting series that spends the night with a small lightweight support team in the crater at 5729m after summitting Kilimanjaro. The following morning we launch excursions to a number of fascinating and rarely seen features within the crater from the Reusch Ash Pit at the crater's centre, to the rapidly retreating edges of the northern and eastern ice fields, where health and strength permit. This is a truly unique opportunity.

Lite Series - For the Strong, Silent Type

A very lightweight, traditional alpinist style, with similar support and provision levels - yet of superior standard and specification - to local budget operations. However, you’ll be required to carry around 12 kg and will only be able to submit 5 kg to your porter. Some foods will be dehydrated and mess tents will not be used. Recommended only for very active and self-sufficient climbers such as regular participants in ultra-endurance events.

  • Suitable only for self-sufficient trekkers / athletes / some armed forces

Superlite Series - For Ridiculously Fit Alpine Purists

A Superlite climb is an entirely self-supported, self-equipped, self-prepared climb, whereby climbers provide and carry all their own food and equipment. KINAPA-enforced regulations require that all climbs on Kilimanjaro be guided by a registered Kilimanjaro guide and therefore Superlite climbs are the closest one may legally come to an unsupported climb, with just the guide and obligatory assistant guides being provided by Team Kilimanjaro.

  • Entirely self-supported, self-equipped, self-prepared climb
  • Climbers provide and carry all their own food and equipment
  • TK assumes that a Superlite climber will have made his or her own way to Arusha
  • Only food and equipment for the guide is provided

  • Extremely spacious 2-metre high Air-Beam tents for sleeping and dining

  • One night's accommodation in Arusha both before and after your climb at the best hotel available on the dates required to be booked

Descend Kilimanjaro by Helicopter (from High Camp)

Summitted Kilimanjaro and don't want to spend a day and a half descending on foot? This option is especially recommended for those with demands on their time and wanting to preserve their knees and ankles from the arduous, repetitive impact associated with the long descent, and will descend you to Moshi Airport from where we will transfer you to Arusha by vehicle.

The helicopter carries 2 climbers and costs USD 1,500 for solo climbers or USD 1,000 per person for those descending in pairs. Payment is either in cash or pre-paid to TK. If pre-paying and you can't fly, you'll be refunded - less lost banking fees.

Bear in mind, however, that chartering the helicopter is dependant on weather and availability - neither of which is particularly dependable.

How to Pay for your Climb, Safari or Zanzibar Excursion

Paying the non-refundable booking deposit. To secure your climb and / or safari with Team Kilimanjaro, we need to receive a booking deposit equivalent to USD 150 per person per event (climb or safari), plus the value of any requested additional nights' accommodation or upgrades to standard inclusive accommodation; and services contracted to 3rd parties, such as safari lodges, Zanzibar hotels or domestic air or road transfer providers.

Once the deposit is received, Team Kilimanjaro disburses the respective elements of this payment to 3rd parties, such as hotels or transport providers, and is thereafter unable to retrieve these funds in the event of a client requesting to cancel their arrangements.

Where a client is, however, required to amend their dates our suppliers will credit values received towards alternative requested dates. If dates are requested to be amended such that they fall outside the current tarif period, an applicable surcharge will be invoiced to address the shortfall between current and new rates, in order to continue to secure the booking on future dates.

Paying your deposit

This is possible in two ways:

  • By bank transfer. We are able to receive payments in USD, GBP, or EUR. If paying in GBP or EUR the requested sum in USD will be converted using the xe.com mid-market exchange rate on the day the funds are requested, and this rate will be valid for 48 hours.

  • By credit or debit card. To address the sense of uncertainty with possible last-minute changes to travel plans imposed by airlines and changing government policy, we are temporarily using the services of a UK-based card payment processor (Stripe UK), rather than our usual card payment processor (Decta).

The advantage of this measure is that we are now able to receive payment of final balances just 28 days prior to the event start date, as opposed to 45 days prior, as was necessary when using Decta. The disadvantage of using Stripe UK is that card invoices are payable in GBP. However, while this may ostensibly appear to be a disadvantage, we have so far found that card issuers have actually converted currencies either at Interbank rates, or in some cases, at slightly better rates than the xe.com mid-market rate.

While it is impossible to anticipate what rate your card issuer will charge, it appears very unlikely to date, that any climbers will be penalised when paying in GBP, irrespective of what currency their funds are held in. Nonetheless, climbers should please understand that any possible deductions levied by their card issuers remain their own risk and will not be discounted by TK.

Paying your final balance

There are three options for this:

  • By bank transfer in USD, EUR, and GBP. Please see above for more detail.
  • By credit or debit card. Please see above for more detail.
  • In cash in USD on arrival. However, since the majority of our costs to suppliers are nowadays payable electronically, we cannot usually accept more than around 30% of your total costs in cash in USD. (Exceptions may exist when joining a group in which the other climbers are not paying in cash).

Is there a surcharge applicable to card payments?

No.

Can I pay with American Express?

Yes.

🌨️ Best time to climb

For many climbers this question is almost irrelevant as they will have to fit their climb into whatever dates they can clear from their busy work or family schedules, though for perhaps the majority, this is probably the first question prospective climbers should ask themselves.

πŸ“‡ Contact

If you're interested in climbing with us, please either complete our enquiry form below or else call us on one of the following numbers, and speak directly to one of our coordinators.

πŸ›ŒπŸ½ Hotels

Back in the day, when as yet not a great deal of thought had been given to what works best for the unacclimatised visitor, the way a Kilimanjaro climb was run was largely a product of the convenience of the local operator.

πŸ›©οΈ Flights

If you choose to climb Kilimanjaro with us you will be required to purchase your flights yourself and to send us details in order to confirm precise dates for your climb, if you are not climbing on one of our scheduled climbs.

🧳 Packing list

The following description of clothing and equipment for Kilimanjaro is based on years of experience and will suffice for virtually all trekkers attempting to climb Kilimanjaro with us. However, we would strongly recommend that you avoid buying your Kilimanjaro kit at the last minute and that you aim to spend a weekend in the hills testing your gear before flying out to climb with us.

πŸ“… Dates

You don't need to climb on these dates shown below. We publish them only for those who wish to climb with others they don't already know. The majority of our clients choose their own dates (at no additional cost), though most request us to open up their climbs for others to join - simply so as to have extra company on the trek.
