Northern Kilimanjaro Ecological Research Station: A Vision Rooted in Action
Introduction: A Lifelong Commitment to Kilimanjaro’s Future
For nearly two decades, I have walked the slopes of Africa’s highest peak not just as a climber, but as a steward of its fragile ecosystem. My journey began in 2006 with a solitary ascent to assess the viability of an ecological research station on Kilimanjaro’s northern flank—a mission driven by a deep-seated concern for the mountain’s receding glaciers and the cascading effects on the communities below.

This wasn’t a performative gesture; it was a hands-on initiative to gather data, propose solutions, and rally support to combat deforestation and deglaciation. Since then, my team and I have continued to champion practical conservation efforts, from route mapping to educational outreach, proving that our commitment is not mere words but a legacy of action.
What follows is a synopsis of the original report from that 2006 expedition, updated to reflect today’s realities and renewed with a call to sustain Kilimanjaro’s vital ecosystems.

Ecology and Predictions: A Shifting Timeline
In 2006, experts predicted Kilimanjaro’s glaciers would vanish entirely between 2015 and 2025, citing deforestation as a key driver of moisture loss and glacial retreat.
Nearly 20 years on, as we stand in 2025, those forecasts have evolved. While significant recession has occurred—Kilimanjaro has lost over 82% of its ice cap since 1912—current models suggest the glaciers may persist until around 2040, thanks in part to sporadic conservation efforts. Yet, the absence of a year-round, systematic monitoring presence on the mountain leaves us ill-equipped to predict the full impact of this ongoing loss on regional water supplies and local livelihoods. Severe droughts and forced migration remain looming threats unless we act decisively.
Mountain Safety: An Escalating Concern
Kibo’s Western Breach, long notorious for rockfall, has grown more perilous since 2006. Once driven solely by crater wall erosion, rockfall now stems from subsiding glacial deposits as overhanging ice recedes. With no regular safety assessments of popular routes—Gilman’s Point, Barafu Rib, and the Western Breach—climbers face unquantified risks. A dedicated monitoring program is overdue.

Proposal: A Research Station for Conservation
To address these pressing needs, I propose establishing an Ecological Research Station on Kilimanjaro’s northern side, far from the tourist-heavy southern routes. This station would enable specialized mountaineering teams, alongside scientists and volunteers, to conduct frequent patrols to key glacial and river sites. By cataloging changes driven by climate shifts, we can deliver actionable data to Tanzanian authorities, empowering policies that align with Kilimanjaro National Park’s mission of conservation through sustainable development.
Expedition Background
On March 7, 2006, I embarked from Kamwanga Forest Station (2°54.7’S, 37°21.9’E) to 5,495m at the Credner Glacier’s northern tip, returning by March 10. This 55.7km journey mapped a low-impact conservation trail to the icefields, avoiding tourism hubs while prioritizing safety and scientific access. A photo-survey of waterways underscored the region’s aridity, a critical finding revisited below.
Primary Reconnaissance Findings
The route posed minimal risks—elephant and buffalo tracks were noted, but encounters were avoidable with non-lethal deterrents like Short Range Directional Acoustic Devices. Rockfall, though present, was predictable and less severe than on southern routes, with a proposed high camp at 4,920m safely sited to the north.
The ascent to the crater demanded mountaineering gear and logistical support for non-expert team members. Most striking was the lack of running water above 2,510m, with rivers like Msanga and Kamwanga East reduced to stagnant pools or dry beds, even after recent rains (see Figures 2-11 in original report).
The Proposed Route
Starting at Mlima Nyuki (1,771m), the 34.8km trail ascends through diverse ecosystems:
- 10.9km of montane Agauria-Ocotea and Cassipourea forest (1,771m–2,570m)
- Subalpine Juniperus and Hagenia forests (2,500m–2,825m)
- 4.0km of Erica trimera bush (2,825m–3,415m)
- 4.7km of Helichrysum newii vegetation (3,415m–4,170m)
- 6.7km of bare rock and scree (4,170m–5,495m)
- 4.2km of glacier and scree to the Furtwangler Glacier surveillance point (5,889m)
From High Camp at 4,920m, the route traces a ridge to the Credner Glacier, requiring crampons and ice-axes for safe passage (see Figures 18-26 in original report).
Surveillance Plan
From a Glacial Survey Base at 5,735m (Camp 4), patrols would:
- Map the Furtwangler Glacier’s perimeter with GPS, tracking recession over time.
- Photograph key icefields (Credner, Penck, Arrow) from designated points (4,688m–5,889m) for longitudinal comparison.
- Assess river flow rates to quantify water loss.
Recommendations
The northern slopes offer a viable base for an Ecological Research Station near Ol Molog-Rongai road, west of Mlima Nyuki. In partnership with Kamwanga Forest Station, the station should spearhead reforestation to curb deglaciation, engaging local leaders to educate communities on the link between tree loss and water scarcity.
Rather than relying solely on Team Kilimanjaro for funding, I propose initial support from international conservation bodies like the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), supplemented by a Team Kilimanjaro-led fundraising campaign to cover ongoing costs for scientists, volunteers, and safety patrols.
A revamped KINAPA website could publish real-time updates, reinforcing climber confidence in safety measures.
A Call to Action
In 2006, Tanzania’s President Kikwete banned tree felling to protect Kilimanjaro’s ice, a step my expedition echoed with practical intent. Today, with glaciers enduring beyond early predictions, we have a window—until 2040—to act. This station isn’t just a plan; it’s a lifeline for Kilimanjaro and its people, rooted in nearly two decades of my hands-on commitment.
